Molecular Epidemiology

Head of the Division: Dr. Philip Raj Abraham, Scientist - B

Unit of Molecular Epidemiology (UnMolE) is a new initiative of ICMR-VCRC to undertake studies on molecular epidemiological aspects of vector borne diseases.

Objectives

Development of molecular tools/Biosensor for detecting filarial infection in vectors

Development of Dengue NS1 antigen based kits for detection of dengue virus in Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus vectors

Investigation of underlying mechanism of Insecticide resistance in vectors

Development of xenomonitoring protocol as a surveillance & evaluation tool for major vector borne diseases such as

  • Bancroftian Filariasis
  • Brugian Filariasis
  • Dengue
  • Malaria
  • Japanese encephalitis

Research Areas

Molecular epidemiology and molecular entomology of vector borne diseases, molecular mechanism of insecticide resistance on vectors and molecular xenomonitoring of vectors of public health importance
