Cyclic colonies of three species of mosquito vectors viz Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector of bancroftian filariasis, Anopheles stephensi, the vector of urban malaria and Aedes aegypti, the vector of dengue and chikungunya are being maintained in the insectary. In addition, cyclic colony of Toxorhynchites splendens, a predatory mosquito speciesis being maintained.

Immature and adult mosquitoes are supplied to various laboratories of the Centre for carrying out basic studies on biology, testing of efficacy of control products and susceptibility to insecticides/biocides. Alive immature and adult mosquito specimens are exhibited at Health and Educational institutes, Puducherry during public health programmes to create awareness of vector borne diseases, mosquitoes life cycle and their control. In addition, two species of larvivorous fishes Gambusia affinis and Poecilia reticulate are maintained in the Insectary for health education purpose.
